Chapter 2

Rufous Creates a Monster

March 14

Uh-oh, Rufous may have created a monster. I am now the proud owner of a Nikon D5000 digital SLR camera with a 300mm lens. I have been planning for this moment since baby Slats (Rufous and Henrietta’s offspring last year) left the nest.

This morning I saw both Rufous and Henrietta in the cypress tree. And I took my very first photo using the new camera! I took it through the loft window, on a gray, rainy day, and it’s not a great shot, but so much better than I was able to get last year! Now if I can only learn how to make great shots with my new camera!

My second attempt at photographing Rufous was a little better. There was enough sunlight today that I can see Rufous' red eye! I'm still trying to get the hang of focusing the telephoto lens.
